Today we had our first CTS lecture. Being generally interested in branding I chose “Brand Busting” classes for first term. I hope to learn more about commercial and civic branding as well as a concept of a brand itself.
We started by sharing our thoughts about branding (whats the first thing that comes to our mind when we hear the word brand).
Logos, commercials, identity, corporations, Mad men,
These are just couple examples of what we thought of. Then our tutor Andrea introduced us to a basic types of brands:
Commercial brands (Apple, IKEA, Cocacola, Nike, Mastercard)
Civic brands (Olympic games)
Personal brands (Kim Kardashian, Andy Warhol, celebrities, artists)
After a brief theory we had a group workshop. First task was to choose a logo and draw it on a piece of paper. Then we had to anthropomorphise our logo and give it a name. We chose McDonald’s logo and named her McFrench.
Second task was to build a character profile for her.
McFrench is a 25-year-old, single, French female. She is a rich, educated (speaks every language)and lazy woman. What she really wants is to her secret love for KFC to come true.
Next task was to create a storyboard with our character.
After that we were asked to brand ourselves (create an autoportrait using brands that we wear/carry with us). We then had to switch our drawings with a person next to us and write a description of them based just on their drawing. It was interesting to see how much can we tell about someone just focusing on the brands they are wearing.
Last exercise for today was to design a logo that would best represent ourselves. Majority of the group created a minimalistic logo using their initials. Here is mine:
It was a fun and engaging first lecture. I am glad that we were able to do some workshop beside the theoretical part.
